Nannie Mae Love Allen Clemson S.C. Nannie Mae Love Allen, 98, widow of Dr. Leonard R. Allen was born in Kings Creek, S.C. She was the fourth of seven children of John R. and Macie Bird Love. She grew up in a large house built by her father and uncles. They traded timber off the farm for lumber, and completed the home by selling crops of corn, beans, and peanuts. The house was always full of friends and family which always made it a lively place to be. Nannie paid her college tuition by working in a textile mill. She received room and board for Winthrop thru her aunt in return for driving her cousin to Winthrop. A 1942 graduate of Winthrop, Nannie taught at Tamassee DAR School. Nannie then moved to Little River, MD to live with her oldest sister in a four-room house. Nearly every member of her family lived or visited in this house, therefore it was just as active as the large house she grew up in at Kings Creek. Nannie fought WWII with as steno pad and a typewriter. She ordered parts, materials, and supplies for Glen L. Martin. While working she met and married Leonard R. Allen. Nannie and Leonard briefly lived in Madison, WI and Morgansville, WVA. After her husband’s discharge from service they moved to S.C. permanently. In 1949, Leonard entered Clemson and Nannie taught shorthand and typing at Central High School. She followed her husband around during his career. In 1961, the family moved to Auburn where Leonard got his masters and PHD. She typed every paper he wrote and helped him in the lab. In 1964, they made Clemson their home where she taught drivers education at Daniel High School until she retired. Nannie enjoyed gardening and was a member of the gardening. She loved traveling on bus tours, eating out, and talking on the telephone. Nannie is survived by one sister, Catherine Barrett of Fort Mill and two sons; Michael (Elaine) Allen of Easley and Gary Allen of Moncks Corner SC, two grandchildren; Chris (Christie) Allen and April Allen Ayling, four great grandchildren; Abby and Ellie Ayling, Bailey and Reese Allen all of Monks Corner SC. Nannie was predeceased by her daughter in law Mary Busby Allen. The family will host a private memorial service at a later date. Memorials may be made to Clemson United Methodist Church, 300 Frontage Rd. Clemson, SC 29631. Mountain View Funeral Home is serving the Allen family.
