Doris Chappell

Doris Chappell Pickens, South Carolina Doris Chappell, age 97, loving wife of 55 years to the late Buren Chappell, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, February 22, 2023. Born November 19, 1925, in Jackson County, North Carolina, Doris was the daughter of the late Emmett Bryson and Orpha Stephens Bryson. Mrs. Chappell was a faithful member of her church, Secona Baptist and enjoyed teaching the four and five year old Sunday school class for many years. She also enjoyed singing in the choir and did so until she was physically unable. She cooked lunch for her family every day. She loved caring for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, keeping them after school and during the summer. She was a helper to her very core. Even after her mind had failed her, she still offered to help in any way she could. She was the matriarch of our family in every way. She was always there to listen and advise, sometimes with serious wisdom and other times with quick wit. She loved to share recipes with family and friends. Always trying something new in the kitchen. She welcomed everyone around her table. If you didn’t have plans for the holidays, she was always quick to invite you to her home. She loved to go shopping with her family and taking beach trips with her sisters. She loved to sew, making many outfits for her children and costumes for her grandchildren. She made both her daughters’ wedding dresses and prom dresses for her granddaughters. She will always be remembered for her strength, not only in mind and body but also in faith. She leaves that legacy behind for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren to carry on. Survivors include her two daughters, Vickie Stewart and Becky Evett (Ricky) both of Pickens; grandchildren, Kerry Stewart (Paul) of Charleston, Alanna Trotter (Chad) of Pickens, Erin Stewart (Erler) of Spartanburg, Kayla O'Rorke (Chris) of Greenville, Lesli Tucker of Pickens, and Erica Evett of Pickens; great-grandchildren, Bryson (Lena), Kenna, Jack, Ruby, Daylen, Griffin, Christos, Seraphima, Aidan, Cambree, Killian, Nicodemus, and Ledger; great-great-grandchildren, Layla and Charlie; a sister, Betty Mentrikoski; and sisters-in-law, Mary Bryson, Georgia Garrett, Joyce Middleton, and Geraldine Anthony. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Chappell was predeceased by an infant daughter, Gilda Jean Chappell; her son-in-law, Dickie Stewart; sisters, Helen Patterson and June Holshouser; and brothers, Bobby Bryson and Donnie Bryson. Visitation will be held on Monday, February 27, 2023, in the chapel of Mountain View Funeral Home in Pickens from 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM with a funeral service to follow at 12:00 PM. Burial will follow the service at Hillcrest Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Doris’ honor may be made to Secona Baptist Church, 234 Secona Rd, Pickens, SC 29671 or to Regency SouthernCare Hospice, 880 S.
